The thermodynamic characterization of soils would help to study and understand their strategies for survival, as well defining evolutionary state. It is still a challenging goal due difficulties in calculating the state variables (enthalpy, Gibbs energy, entropy) reactions taking place in, by, soils. Advances instrumentation methodologies are bringing options those calculations, boosting interest this subject. involve considering soil microbial functions key channels controlling interchange matter energy between environment, through concept use efficiency. role diversity using from organic substrates, and, therefore, who, where, with whom, why managing that unexplored. could be achieved by unraveling nature substrates monitoring released metabolism when decomposing assimilating substrates. This review shows art these concepts future impact thermodynamics on science ecology.
